CLEAN AIR DAY – XR SAYS, “ACT NOW!”

  • Toxic NO2 levels recorded by SCC’s partner organization care4air all across the city. Outside schools (eg Nether Edge school), at the station’s taxi rank (with taxis idling), and along congested routes like Spital Hill.

  • XR’s action, by the Barefoot Warriors, is informational, with masked activists and placards, inviting passersby to engage in conversations about the pollution of our air.

Extinction Rebellion’s activist group, the Barefoot Warriors, wish to mark Clean Air Day with an action reminding passengers, drivers and pedestrians, at rush hour on the 20th June, outside the train station, of the urgent need to change the way we live and breathe. We will be wearing masks to signal the toxic levels of NO2 fumes generated by our cars and lorries, and wearing placards that urge changes in habits, hearts and governance in the city: drive less, use public transport, walk, cycle – let’s break the polluting habits that are strangling Sheffield’s health and well being.

Quotes:

XR Sheffield supporter Adam Piette says:

“Air pollution is an environmental and health crisis across the UK. The Council at Sheffield’s own research shows toxic levels of air pollution on our major roads, at the station, outside schools. We need to act now to control the use of cars in the city. Our lungs are being poisoned, children are struggling to breathe, there’s an unseen miasma over the whole city. Just smell the air come rush hour! Listen to the idling engines, see the exhaust fumes flow along our roadways!”

Climate Factsheet for Rebels https://rebellion.earth/the-climate-factsheet-for-rebels/

About Extinction Rebellion:

Time has almost entirely run out to address the ecological crisis which is upon us, including the 6th mass species extinction and abrupt, runaway climate change. Societal collapse and mass death are seen as inevitable by scientists and other credible voices, with human extinction also a possibility, if rapid action is not taken.

Extinction Rebellion believes it is a citizen’s duty to rebel, using peaceful civil disobedience, when faced with criminal inactivity by its Government.Extinction Rebellion’s key demands are:

  • The Government must tell the truth about the ecological emergency, reverse inconsistent policies and work alongside the media to communicate with citizens

  • The Government must enact legally binding policy measures to reduce carbon emissions to net zero by 2025 and to reduce consumption levels

  • A national Citizens’ Assembly to oversee the changes, as part of creating a democracy fit for purpose.
