DEEDS NOT WORDS - DIE IN

  • Extinction Rebellion Sheffield aims to demand a stronger response from the council and make sure they act on their promises. These actions must be guided by transparency and the people of Sheffield.

  • Die-In Rebels will assemble at 10:00 AM on Wednesday 15th of May outside the Sheffield Town Hall and participate in the “die-in” in the Town Hall foyer and its premises.

The Die-In, set to take place on Wednesday 15th of May, is an act of unity with the world’s beautiful creatures and plants to push ecocide and the climate emergency to demand greater action on the crisis sooner. We will be lying down en masse around the council’s premises to represent the ongoing daily, hourly deaths and deterioration as a result of climate and ecological breakdown.

Sheffield City Council has shown vocal leadership on this issue since declaring “unequivocally that our city, country and planet are facing a climate emergency 1” on Wednesday 6th February. We congratulate them on this.

Unfortunately, motions and words alone will not save this beautiful world and prevent climate and ecological breakdown. Given the newly elected councillors, this act of solidarity will serve as a wake up call on the council to press on for real, transparent and immediate action. This is a call that is echoing around the country. A recent YouGov poll showed that 24% people in the UK thought that environmental issues were in the top three most important issues facing the country 2. This was an equal percentage to those concerned about the economy.

We welcome everyone to stand their ground together in this non violent act of disobedience to make it clear to the council that we won’t rest until immediate action is taken and that we won’t resist in holding them accountable.

We encourage everyone to bring banners and placards that follow the theme of “Life or Death” and stipulate the need for the council to “Act Now”, make “Deeds not Words.”. Musical instruments are welcomed to create a cacophonic sound in a very turbulent time of humanity.

Quotes:

Nathan Strathdee, 19:

“The declaration of climate emergency is a big step forward. Now we want bigger, better and quicker actions to tackle the emergency.”

Tevy Kuch, 18:

“We must keep reminding ourselves and those in power of the dire situation that we’ve put ourselves in. Declaring a climate emergency was just the tip of the iceberg, there needs to be more action and more tangible change.”

Climate Factsheet for Rebels https://rebellion.earth/the-climate-factsheet-for-rebels/

About Extinction Rebellion:

Time has almost entirely run out to address the ecological crisis which is upon us, including the 6th mass species extinction and abrupt, runaway climate change. Societal collapse and mass death are seen as inevitable by scientists and other credible voices, with human extinction also a possibility, if rapid action is not taken.

Extinction Rebellion believes it is a citizen’s duty to rebel, using peaceful civil disobedience, when faced with criminal inactivity by its Government.

Extinction Rebellion’s key demands are:

  • The Government must tell the truth about the ecological emergency, reverse inconsistent policies and work alongside the media to communicate with citizens
  • The Government must enact legally binding policy measures to reduce carbon emissions to net zero by 2025 and to reduce consumption levels
  • A national Citizens’ Assembly to oversee the changes, as part of creating a democracy fit for purpose.
