Defend Our Juries
On 24th October, United Nations Day, several of XR Sheffield joined more than 300 others on a green street corner in London. The sun flickered through the autumnal trees while we were given placards with photos of political prisoners, past and present. The moving (in both senses of the word) exhibition then processed to Petty France where we sat down in three long rows outside the Attorney General’s office, with the headline demand ‘Free Political Prisoners’, also the sacking of Lord Walney, the supposedly ‘independent’ government adviser - although there’s a lot more to it than that!
Over an hour later, a group of wonderful singers, Reverend Billy and the Stop Shopping Choir, threaded their way through our lines and led us back to return our placards - essential for next time! Delicious vegan food and a people’s assembly on ‘What is a political prisoner?’ followed. It was a powerful and memorable day.
