OIL ON THE WINGS OF A DOVE

Press Release for Action on 16th April Immediate Release

Oil on the Wings of a Dove - Extinction Rebellion Sheffield will give voice to the voiceless and rebel for life this Tuesday by holding a die-in outside BP’s HQ this Tuesday. - In a piece of free form protest art, Extinction Rebellion Sheffield will draw attention to the enormous ecological and climatic impact of the dirty fossil fuel industry.

Over it’s long history BP, like many other fossil fuel companies, has shown itself to be a force for destruction and death. BP is the 11th largest company emitter of carbon dioxide on the planet 1. Fossil fuel companies and production are responsible for 70% of all anthropogenic carbon emissions to date, causing harm to humans, fauna and flora across the world. Their actions mean we must now rebel.

It was recently revealed that BP, along with Exxon Mobil and Chevron, have spent millions on thwarting the effective climate emergency legislation that is desperately needed to protect this beautiful planet 2. This shows that, rather than acting as good stewards of the planet, BP are simply engaged in perpetuating their destructive profits. Their greed means we must now rebel.

This destruction has never been more clearly displayed than in the Deepwater Horizon disaster of April 2010. Deepwater Horizon was the largest spill of oil in the history of marine oil drilling operations and caused the death of 11 workers on the rig 3 and had massive ecological effects 4.

This all means that we must rebel. Rebel, not just against extinction but to preserve the life and beauty that can flourish on this planet.

Societal collapse and mass death are seen as inevitable by scientists and other credible voices, with human extinction also a possibility, if rapid action is not taken. Extinction Rebellion believes it is a citizen’s duty to rebel, using peaceful civil disobedience, when faced with criminal inactivity by its Government. Extinction Rebellion’s key demands are: The Government must tell the truth about the ecological emergency, reverse inconsistent policies and work alongside the media to communicate with citizens The Government must enact legally binding policy measures to reduce carbon emissions to net zero by 2025 and to reduce consumption levels A national Citizens’ Assembly to oversee the changes, as part of creating a democracy fit for purpose.
